Does the thought of the dentist make you nervous? Looking for a Houston, TX sedation dentist? Dental anxiety is extremely common; in fact, it is estimated that over 30,000,000 Americans skip treatment each year over their phobia! At InStyle Dental Group, our Houston sedation dentist is proud to offer various forms of sedation dentistry to ensure each of our patients can have a calming and relaxing experience.
Many patients think our Houston sedation dentistry is supposed to include sleep; this, however, isn’t the case. Most sedatives allow our patients to remain awake during their procedure.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas” is a mild sedative that can be used to relax a patient during dental treatment. Delivered through a nose mask, nitrous can elevate your mood, calm your nerves, and provide a sense of well-being. Once treatment is complete, the effects will quickly wear off.
For more severe dental anxiety, oral conscious sedation can be a great choice. Oral medication will be provided before receiving dental treatment and will provide moderate sedation. Although oral conscious sedation is not meant to make you sleep, drowsiness is common. A patient receiving oral conscious sedation will need a designated driver to and from their appointment.
Intravenous sedation provides an immediate, moderate level of sedation, patients have reported that it was if they slept through the entire procedure. Often used for shorter treatments, IV sedation is administered via an injection into the bloodstream. As with oral conscious sedation, a designated driver is required for IV sedation.
